Guide to GRP Products

Chopped Strand Mat

A non-woven reinforcement e-glass fibre is used in mouldings such as boats, canopies, cars etc.

Product characteristics of Chopped Strand Matt

  • Uniform thickness.
  • Easy wet-out in resins.
  • Good covering and air releasing properties.
  • Good mould conformability.
  • High translucency and smooth surfaces.
  • High wet-strength retention.

Technical specifications of Chopped Strand Matt using 450 gsm

  • Weight - 450g per square meter.
  • Moisture content - less than 0.1%.
  • Sizing type - Silane.
  • Compatibility - Polyester, Vynelester, Epoxy and Phenolic resins just to name a few.
  • Width - 1m to 1.3m is a standard, but can be made up to 3m wide.
  • Binder content 5.0% with a tolerance of 3% up or down.

Woven Roving

Made by the interweaving of rovings and is used mainly for hand lay-up of large, high strength FRP products such as boats, storage tanks, ballistic application, trucking and architectural structures to name a few.

Product characteristics of Woven Roving

  • Low fuzz, minimal contamination, easy to cut.
  • Fast wet-out.
  • Even thickness.
  • Good covering and degassing properties.
  • High mechanical strength.

Technical specifications of Woven Roving

  • Alkali content - <0.8% (e-glass)
  • Alkali content - <12% (c-glass)
  • Moisture content - <0.1%
  • Coupling agent - silane
  • Loss of elongation or elasticity - 0.5% with a tolerance of 0.2% up or down.
  • Compatibility - Polyester, Vynelester, Epoxy and Phenolic resins just to name a few.

General Purpose Webbing or Leno Weave Scrim Fabrics

A web based E-glass fabric used in a variety of applications like in a mould with resin, for soil retention in gardens, as shade netting or for fencing , used to reinforce impregnated materials etc.

  • UV resistant
  • Chemical resistant
  • Fire proof - Phenolic Resin coated.
  • Stiffness - when coated depending on chemical.

Technical Specifications

  • E-glass
  • Width - Varies between products.

Non Slip Matt

An E-Glass coated fibreglass fabric. Can be used in car boots, under throw rugs, on table tops, in the shower etc.

Product Characteristics of Non Slip Matt

  • Chemical resistant.
  • Good grip to most surfaces.

  • E-Glass base fabric.
  • Width - Varies between products.

Surface Tissue

Product Characteristics of Surface Tissue

  • Good chemical resistance - on C-Glass Tissue.
  • Good wet-out.
  • Easy to drape.
  • Easy mouldability.
  • Has good chemical barrier properties - only on C-Glass.

  • 25 gsm
  • Continuous random lay
  • C-Glass

Fibreglass Tape

Has excellent electric insulation, corrosion resistance, high tensile strength and good resin impregnation.

Uses

  • Suitable for the insulation of electric machinery and dry-type transformers.
  • Strengthening the sides of the mould.
  • Wrapping of pipes and many more applications.

Chopped Strands

Used as reinforcements in thermoplastics and thermoset moulding compounds and to produce moulded parts for mechanical and chemical resistant applications in transportation, appliance, machinery, farm equipment, electrical, utility and construction industries to name a few applications.

Product Characteristics

  • Good strand integrity.
  • Good dispersion.
  • Low “fuzz/fines” content.
  • Low static.
  • Different strand lengths available 3mm, 6mm, 12mm and 18mm

Technical Specification

  • Alkali content <0.8% (E-glass)
  • Alkali content <12% (C-glass)
  • Cutting ability >93%
  • Moisture content <0.20% (E-glass)
  • Moisture content <0.30% (C-glass)
  • Coupling agent silane.

Resin

A liquid, semi solid or solid complex mixture of organic compounds. Usually a polymer. Sometimes used interchangeable with the word plastic.

Release Agent

A substance used to prevent the adhesion of the moulded part to the mould.

Polypropylene

An engineering thermoplastic of the polyolefin family; higher melting, stronger more rigid and abrasion resistant than polyethylene.

Pigment

A material added to a resin to give the colour.

Matt

A randomly distributed felt of glass fibres used in reinforced plastics which are bonded with a powder resin, and emulsion material or stitched together with a polyester yarn.

Gelcoat

A thin UV stabilized surface coat, either coloured or clear, of non reinforced resin. It is used for decorative purpose and provides a protective coating for the underlying laminate.

Cheese

Cylindrical configuration in which fibreglass thread is usually wound in a different tex or product.

Resin

Mix resin and catalyst together then apply to your fiberglass in the mould to keep the shape of the mould.

1 kg resin - 20 g catalyst - 2% of Resin weight.

1.5 kg resin - 30 g catalyst - 2% of Resin weight.

2 kg resin - 40 g catalyst - 2% of Resin weight.

Keep away from children.

Catalyst

All resin, gelcoats, poolcoats, flowcoats, bonding pastes must be catalysed with hardener (MEKP) before use. Minimum of 1% and maximum of 3% of the product weight is to be used.

Please note do not fibreglass anything when the ambient temperature is below 15°C as it will result in under curing of product.

Pigments

Pigments are added to resins, gelcoats, poolcoats and flowcoats in a paste or powder form to obtain the desired colour of the product.

Release Agent

Release agents are applied in the mould prior to any laminating. This will prevent product adhering to the mould.

Gelcoat

Is used to give it a smooth shape surface of the finished laminate and is therefore applied first into the mould after application of releasing agents and waxes.

Keep away from children.

Storage and Handling

Polyester resins should be stored in closed metal containers and maintained below 25°C and away from heat sources and sunlight. Keep away from children.

Brush Cleaner

Keep in closed containers, as it is a solvent and is highly flamible.

Keep away from children.
